As the stock climbs, so does the short interest here. People are betting on pullbacks. Me, I think they are nuts. Anyone here on this board short ATHX? What's your thinking? Settlement Date / Short Interest / Avg Daily Share Volume / Days To Cover

I sold some in the 2.60's and I will be glad to buy some more if the shorts take it down. Let them go ahead and do their work.

I don't short stocks, on principal. But I do pay attention to what stocks seem vulnerable. And this isn't one that I would peg as a short target. I agree, I think you'd be playing it fast and loose, with partnership potential at any time.

3/15 stock was at 2.33 and that was a long time high. Since then every close was even higher. The 3.8M shares short are in the red now. They could double down and short more now. Or cover at loss. Or probably just wait ... Could be interesting... Hope you'll find another entry, selluwud. But then again, I also hope not. Harley, yes agree.

You have had a good March I am afraid to say anything that would jinx me, but I can't complain. I guess the years spent invested in Ocata opened my eyes to getting off the train while I am further along to my destination, than staying on before the tracks are completed. Changing trains and taking different routes makes for a more eventful and enjoyable trip, even though there will be occasional delays sometimes. I am currently patiently waiting for opportunities to get back in a few issues if they retreat enough. How's your year so far?

So far it has been pretty un-eventful for me since I bought too early with two stocks and have been averaging down. One is now 20% in the green and the other is still 20% in the red. The former I plan on holding for a bit, while I will definitely shave some off of the top of the latter after good news is announced (hopefully). I am definitely still a firm believer in taking profits while you can and not holding 100% of one's shares through a binary event (data announcement)...if I could only follow my own advice

The many managers and members that post here have given me more information that I could have gotten on my own and for that I am grateful. May this never go the way of iCell as we know what happened there, even though I made many online acquaintances there that were welcomed.

Of interest, there are a number of Twitter biotech investors posting statements that I believe indicate many investors' attitudes towards ATHX. In nearly all cases, they echo Adam Feuerstein's reasoning that the stroke trial failed to meet primary endpoints and that the 1-year data has been "tweaked". I don't see any avowed shorts acknowledging that the 1-year data met the 90-day efficacy criteria. Many appear to think the 1-year data still included only a subset of patients like the post hoc analysis and it appears most have trouble acknowledging the fact that stem cells might exhibit or trigger continuing actions within the body that traditional pharmaceuticals do not. Many are amazed and confused by ATHX's performance in 2016 and think it is a fluke. Comments like @andybiotech's "Nothing to show for after 20 yrs and burning $300M+", @shaneblackmon calling $ATHX "trash biotech" and @nikkorico calling MultiStem "their dead drug" continue to demonstrate ignorance of both the science and the investment opportunity that is ATHX. That's not unexpected. Based on many investment criteria, ATHX is a tempting short target. There are many examples of companies "massaging" trial data in an attempt to show efficacy where there is none. ATHX is the best performing biotech stock in 2016, up 150%, and the chart appears to be topping for at least the short term. So the short thesis is sound, up to a point. I tend to think they are wrong in this case. First, it is getting more and more likely MultiStem will be approved for stroke in Japan. Second, Athersys' ability to negotiate multiple partnerships demonstrates business acumen not typically exhibited by development-stage biotechs. Third, the knowledge obtained from the UC and IS trials is just starting to be revealed: MultiStem's MoA is far better understood than it was even a couple of years ago and dosing times and levels are coming into focus. Fourth, production, distribution and preparation methods continue to improve, with the goals of reasonable cost and ready availability to patients becoming within the company's grasp. And fifth, with the approval of Mesoblast/JCR's TEMCELL teatment for GvHD and continuing success in P3 trials of their cells, the stem cell field is starting to come into its own. Stem cell treatments are, by any definition, "disruptive technology". Only the very few lucky or astute investors typically get in on the ground floor of disruptive technologies. I believe we are among those very few.
