I'm a cheap person. I use coupons at the grocery store. I cringe when I have to pay 5 bucks for a beer at a restaurant. I refuse to pay money in order to type stuff on a message board. It's because of my cheapness that I immediately came here once the "free members" were no longer allowed to post anything on the other board. I agreed with Patti about not wanting to start any gossip so I will apologize in advance, but I wanted to do this post for some of the people that I really admire on the other board. I see Mostlyliquid just came over but there are others such as 22, Malvas, Dauphin, Stockfodder, Ike, Gizmo, Dyooperya, and many more that I would love to see here as well. I am a freelance computer tech and I held my tongue for awhile, but being the cheapskate that I am, I don't like when people are taken advantage of.
If you hover over the other boards logo you will see that it says "powered by vBulletin". VBulletin is the message board software used on the site. There are options to host the message board in the cloud for $60 a month but that is not the option that is being used. The software being used is the vBulletin standalone package. The pricing for the software can be found HERE and runs about $300 or so. (not seeing any $10,000 packages BTW). Not sure if the license is annual or not but lets be conservative and say it is annual, so $300/year. The vBulletin software is being hosted on a GoDaddy server which can be verified HERE. The advantage to paying GoDaddy or any other host service is that you can run advertising. The cost of the different tiers of GoDaddy server packages can be found HERE but the highest priced ones are around $300/month so lets go with that. Domain name registration is a cheap annual fee, so really worst case scenario the total cost is somewhere around $350 a month for everything.
I did a search for all members who have posted since the upgrade and found 202 members. Let's be conservative again since some are moderators and pretend all of these people only pay $4.95 a month. That comes to almost $1000/month income minus the $350/month expenses so a very conservative $650/month profit. As I alluded to earlier the advantage of paying for a host server is the ability to allow advertisers on your site and I am willing to bet that this is an even greater source of income than the membership fees. You may have noticed on the front page a header that shows how to advertise with the other board.
Jham did a great job picking this free "ProBoards" service (it's one of the top 3 and a great choice IMO) The reason it's free however is that ProBoards gets all the advertising dollars. We will have banner ads eventually, they simply have not caught onto our traffic yet because the site is new, but they will. The irony however is that if you look at the bottom of the page here you will see a link: "click here to remove banner ads from this forum" so essentially we can pay a fee to remove the ads once they appear if we so choose. On the other board they pay a fee, still have the ads anyway, and it looks like they are soon getting pop-up video ads too. It's insulting to paying members. So come join us here on the Biotech Investor and buy an extra 1400 shares of ACTC with the yearly savings. Fine print: I will take my 10% advisory fee on those 1400 shares once market cap is 10 billion
